THE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS COMMITTEE

  • Please try to turn your engines off while in the carpool lanes (no idling).  The weather is perfect these days, and the benefits of having clean air for our children, faculty, parents and even siblings along for the ride are very important.
  • Throughout history, students have been the driving force in social change.  Now more than ever is the time for students across the country to join the movement against global warming.  Please educate your children (and yourselves) by taking action at home and school.  Two great websites:
stopglobalwarming.org (Take Action At School) and http://www.takecareoftexas.org/for-kids/ .
  • Interested in seeing the recycling process from beginning to end?  Check out The City of Arlington's website at  http://www.ci.arlington.tx.us/environment/recycling_video.html# .  It's a great reference!  The City of Highland Village contracts with Abitibi and uses the same process.

Our committee is in the process of a fundraiser.  We currently have reusable grocery cart bags (that clip on to your cart and are amazing!).  The cost is only $10/ea.  (Half the cost goes right back in to our committee, so that we are able to bring more awareness for our children & campus!!  Please contact Yvonne Halcomb at yhalcomb@hotmail.com or Trae Atchison at traeatchison2004@yahoo.com .

And please remember the 3 R's:  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!!

 COMPUTER AND TECHNOLOGY RECYCLING

Staples makes it easy for customers to recycle e–waste by simply bringing their used computers, monitors, laptops, and desktop printers, faxes and all–in–ones to any U.S. Staples store.. All brands are accepted, regardless of whether or not the equipment was purchased at Staples. A recycling fee of $10 per piece of large equipment is charged to cover handling, transport, product disassembly and recycling. Smaller computer peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and speakers are accepted at no charge.

MATH AND CHESS CLUB

We've had a great turn out at the Math and Chess Club.  There have been about 20 students each meeting.  They've been challenging their skills at math and chess, but I'd say that chess is their favorite.  We still have one meeting in Dec. on the 19th, Wednesday.  Listed are the meeting dates for when we come back in January:

Jan. 16th and 30th, Feb. 13th and 27th, March 12th and 26th, April 9th and 23, and May 14 and 28th (that will be our end of year party).  All these are on Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00.

If anyone is interested in joining, they can join at anytime.  I will need a parent permission slip - extra copies are in the office. Or contact Karen Burkard /Math and Chess Club Coordinator 214-316-8267

THE TALENT SHOW IS NEAR!

McAuliffe students have some extraordinary talent, so come show it off!  The Talent Show is on January 24.  That may seem still a long ways off, but it will be here before you know it.  Students, think of a two-minute act.  You can sing, dance, play a musical instrument… whatever talent you want to share!  Auditions are Tuesday January 8th and Thursday January 10th.  Sign up sheets are posted outside the music room. Pick a day and time – and tell your parents!  If you have background music, it needs to be school-appropriate and you will need to leave a copy with us at the audition.

If you have any questions, please contact me, Ben Ewart, by phone at 972-317-4205 or by email at ben.ewart@verizon.net.  Thank you for supporting your kids!

Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who have worked tirelessly to keep up with our talented authors.  And to those creative authors out there who have not submitted a book to Challenger yet, we are ready and waiting for you.  The holiday break is a perfect time to get your ideas down on paper.  Get those fabulous books turned in to your teachers after the break!  On behalf of Challenger Publishing, we all wish you a peaceful and memorable holiday.  We’ll see you in 2008!
